Behind The Camera: Q&A with Jennifer

2jw

Are you a full-time photographer?

Yes, I am. I feel so very lucky to do the work I do.   I love working with people and families.  I love teaching others.  And I love the chance to create new art exploring more of our natural environment.

Have you received formal training?

I received my BA from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA.  I attended from 1998 – 2001 learning traditional film and darkroom in addition to digital photography.  My major was commercial/advertising.

How would you define your style of photography?

My style is simple and clean and creative with strong technical elements – lighting, composition, etc. I consider myself a technical expert and a digital whiz.  I am influenced by traditional styles with a twist of contemporary.

What are your thoughts about digital photography?

Today all work is digitally shot, edited and processed by me.  The benefits include instant evaluation, faster shooting, processing, retouching, enhancements, online sharing and faster turn-around.  I speak Photoshop fluently and truly have fun with the creative tools that digital photography has to offer.

How did you get started as a photographer?

In 1998, I explored photography with my first film SLR camera.  Following a hunch I took some classes and got a job as a photo assistant in New Orleans.  My wonderful mentors encouraged me to pursue my degree at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara.

Where did you work after college?

I received an internship in 2001 with a respected nature photographer Art Wolfe.  I lived in Seattle where I also worked with a photo stock agency creating a digital database and website.  I began taking portraits on the side and in my free time explored the lush rainforests and coast of the Pacific Northwest continuing to develop my portfolio.

When did you open your studio?

I decided to open my studio in 2004.  I moved home to be near my family and friends.  Unfortunately after only one year in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina flooded the city and in 2005 my husband and I relocated to North Carolina.

Where do you take your nature photographs?

To balance working with people, I like to spend time at a slower pace in nature – as near as my own backyard.  My specialty is close-ups and my collection includes a wide range of flowers from roses to rhododendrum.  Moving around the country and traveling often, my landscape collection showcases work from California, Washington, North Carolina and several other US States.

You’ve lived in so many places.

New Orleans, Santa Barbara, Seattle, North Carolina – not to mention all the travel I do!!  All places have a unique beauty and I’ve found that home is really where the heart is. Making new friendships and meeting new people has been a constant blessing.

Testimonals

I am so THRILLED!  These are by far the best images I've ever seen of Nate.  You totally captured him!  I will have a difficult time deciding.  I have so many on my favorites list!  Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

My wife, son & I met Jennifer at the studio for our session.  A couple weeks later, Jennifer called to come to view the images she had taken. We were astonished at the results! Brought tears of joy and filled our hearts with pride. We viewed about 80 proofs, most of which were wonderful.  Jennifer was able to capture the good, the great, the sad, the serious, the innocent and the special moments together and the true essence of our son.  We now have a stunning array of images that we will treasure forever!  The price was very reasonable and I would recommend her to anyone.  Thank you, Jennifer.

As expected, we LOVE the photos.  They captured us so much…you have a gift for making people feel comfortable.  #83 of me and Rob is the best photo we’ve ever had taken together, even counting our wedding!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

These pictures are so awesome.  How am I going to choose?  Thank you so much - you have no idea how precious these are to me.

I approached Jennifer about getting a business photo to use for marketing. I had one done last year, but felt it was sterile and did not communicate the message I wanted to project about myself or my business. On the shoot, Jennifer made it fun and easy. She was open to my ideas but also showed experience and creative talent achieving the type of photo I was looking for. The results were phenonemonal! I had so many good proofs to pick from I sent them to my network for voting.  Everyone was impressed. Jennifer was patient and easy to work with - a definite choice for any photo needs in the future. I would highly recommend her if you care to get the best.
